New York Fashion Week SS13 with Amika

We certainly did have quite the time during Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Week here in NYC. Amika was  out and about spreading "hair love" and of course indulging in our obsession with all things fashion. We partied and primped the night away at Sephora on Fashion Night Out, and collaborated with stylists and designers at the VPL and Zero+Maria Cornejo runway shows. The fashion bloggers at the Birchbox Blogger Lounge swooned over samples of our Nourishing Hair Mask and got styled by the best-of-the-best from the amika styling team. Honestly, words cannot even begin to do it all justice, so we're giving you a little visual taste of amika at NYFW. Enjoy!

Backstage Pass: VPL Spring/Summer 2012 Fashion Show

amika tools were a part of another beautiful show at New York Fashion Week. At the VPL Spring/Summer 2012 Show we provided the hair tools that lead hairstylist Bob Recine and his team used to create the hair look. The collection had a scuba/surf vibe and to emphasize all of the bare skin in the silhouettes, the hair was clean, wet and slicked back as if the model had just stepped out of the water.

How to get the look:

1. Section the hair and saturate each section with mousse.

2. Comb the hair back, away from the face, wrap with a towel and hold in place with alligator clips.

3. Carefully blow dry to set. Bob used the amika NRG Professional Drying System.

4. Remove towels and clips and voilĂ .

A big thank you to VPL SS2012 beauty sponsor Beauty.com for inviting us to participate! See more images from the show on our VPL Facebook album. Check out more coverage on the VPL beauty look from beauty experts at Temptalia.

Hair Trends for Fall 2011 from New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week only ended last week. Is it too early to talk about trends? Maybe... but we did see some interesting ideas emerging on the New York runways.

Rodarte, Y3
Coming Undone
Rodarte's prairie girls were a favorite on Twitter. The hair was side-swept, slightly messy and incorporated a mini fishtail braid.

Models at Y-3 sported thick french braids that were woven loosely and imperfectly.

Michael Kors, J. Mendel

Relaxed Glamour
For Michael Kors' 30th anniversary show, Orlando Pita, inspired by the 90's, pulled hair back into an effortless side bun. He said it was meant to look as if "a girl had done it herself."

At J. Mendel the hair, pulled back with a center part, was simply elegant.

Marchesa, VPL

Statement Chignon
The look at Marchesa was romantic and edgy, the hair erupted into a voluminous textured chignon at the back.

VPL hair stylist Recine re-imagined the chignon into an origami form. The hair was folded intricately, quite like the clothing in the collection, creating a silhouette with impact.

Exclusive Backstage Videos from VPL AW2011

Amika adores VPL. The brand is at once utilitarian, sculptural and chic. The incorporation of subtly sexy undergarments and innovative materials makes each collection highly anticipated. This season, Amika provided all the tools used to create the hair looks for the VPL show. We were thrilled to get a backstage glimpse at the VPL Fall 2011 collection.

Recine, the lead hairstylist for the show, created an intricate origami inspired chignon. We spoke with him about his inspiration and how he achieved the look.

We also spoke to legendary model Hannelore Knuts, who provided creative direction for this collection. Amika is Brooklyn based and we found out she is our neighbor! Very cool.

The collection was an exploration in form and texture inspired by the sculptures of Piero Manzoni, Joseph Beuys and Dustin Yellin. Nude latex was paired with luxurious weighty knits, laminated nylon and neoprene. The fabrics, in warm metallics, nudes and bold rust orange, were layered and wrapped. They cut across and bound each other and the body.
